Required Meal Plans and Meal Rollover Policy

Applicability

  • This policy applies to all Rutgers University–New Brunswick students who purchase or are required to purchase a university meal plan. It governs mandatory meal plan participation for students residing in university residence halls and voluntary meal plan participation for non-residential students.

Required Meal Plans

  • First-year students residing in a Rutgers University–New Brunswick residence hall are required to purchase a minimum 210-meal plan for both the Fall and Spring semesters.
  • Returning students residing in a Rutgers University–New Brunswick residence hall are required to purchase a minimum 150-meal plan for both the Fall and Spring semesters.

Meal Rollover Policy

  • Unused Fall semester meals for first-year students residing in a residence hall will automatically roll over to the Spring semester provided they purchase the same meal plan or a higher meal plan for the Spring semester. Any meals remaining at the conclusion of the Spring semester will expire and will not be reimbursed.
  • Unused Fall semester meals for returning students residing in a residence hall will automatically roll over to the Spring semester provided they purchase the same meal plan or a higher meal plan for the Spring semester. Any meals remaining at the conclusion of the Spring semester will expire and will not be reimbursed.
  • Students who do not reside in a Rutgers University–New Brunswick residence hall will automatically roll over unused meals from the Fall semester to the Spring semester, provided they purchase the same meal plan or a higher meal plan for the Spring semester. Students who opt to purchase a lower-tier meal plan for the Spring semester are not eligible to roll over unused Fall semester meals. Any meals remaining at the conclusion of the Spring semester will expire and will not be reimbursed.

Additional Provisions

  • All students with meal plans are encouraged to use their meal swipes to obtain the best value from their meal plans. Meals eaten during the semester that are not from a meal swipe could leave unused swipes. With unused Fall semester meals rolling to the Spring semester, if applicable, it is incumbent on students to be mindful of their remaining meals.
  • Meal rollovers apply only from the Fall semester to the Spring semester of the same academic year.
  • Unused guest meals will be forfeited at the conclusion of each semester. Unused Fall semester guest meals will not roll over to the Spring semester.
  • Unused meals have no cash value and are non-transferable, and cannot be redeemed for cash or credit.
  • Rutgers University Dining Services reserves the right to modify this policy as necessary. Any changes to this Policy will be communicated to all affected students but would not diminish or negatively affect students’ meal plan contracts during an academic year.
