Your meal plan allows you to eat in a Dining Services operated dining hall or retail facility, but NOT ALL Dining Services retail facilities accept the meal plan.
If you choose to use your meal plan in our retail locations, you will be allowed a $10 meal value which will consist of a center of the plate item such as a sandwich, a side and a fountain beverage. Most of the items on the menu will fit into this $10 value, but if you choose an item that requires more than $10, you will be charged the difference in cash, credit or RU Express.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Outside Food & Beverages
Outside Food & Beverages
To ensure the health and safety of our community and to maintain strict compliance with the New Jersey State Retail Food Code (N.J.A.C. 8:24), outside food and beverages are not permitted in Rutgers Dining facilities.
This policy is in place to:
- Prevent Cross-Contamination: Protect students with severe food allergies from unverified ingredients.
- Ensure Sanitation: Comply with state mandates requiring all food consumed on-site to be from approved, inspected sources.
- Manage Liability: Maintain a controlled environment where food safety and temperature standards are strictly monitored by our certified staff.
- Why are these policies in place?
Rutgers Dining Services meal plans are designed for “all you care to eat” in the dining halls. We understand that students are very busy and need the flexibility to eat on the run, since sitting in a dining hall requires more time than a quick serve retail location.
- Why is my meal swipe valued at $10 when I may have paid more for that swipe?
There is the value of the food and/or items being purchased. This does not include the costs of labor, overhead, etc... incurred by Dining Services
- Retail Swipe Policy - Three (3) swipes per day
Three (3) total meal swipes per day is permitted across all retail/dining hall takeout operations.
You are always welcome to eat in the dining halls as often as you choose.
